hen the word ‘Ninja’ comes to mind, what does it evoke? Mysticism, a total absence of fear, extreme martial arts, litheness, agility, clothing devoid of colour – black to allow them to hide in the shadows, I could go on and on. The word that really stands out, for me is ‘surprise’.
These youngsters are taken at an early age, settled in monastery –type accommodation and taught the means of controlling their minds and behaviour to reflect no emotion and feel no pain. In ‘Ninja Assassin’ this is taken even further. The children are orphans (often taken from the street) and belong to the most secret of clans – the Ozunu . Such is their stealth and expertise as Ninjas that they are utilised for ‘high-power’ assassinations worldwide.
There is no escape for these youngsters as their master is of such evil intent that he has no conscience. In fact, inflicting pain is the art at which he is most adept. Anyone caught attempting to flee faces the death penalty – which in itself is extremely tortuous.
And this is where ‘Ninja Assassin’ comes in to its own. Raizo (Rain) was one of these children and he has turned the tide, avenging the blood of one of his only ‘friends’.
Intricately woven into the tail is the involvement of Europol – Mika Coretti (Naomi Harris), a researcher and her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles) who attempt to uncover the trail of this seemingly mythical clan.
